Speakers at the NB-IoT Forum meeting, held on Feb. 21 in Barcelona, Spain, have emphasized the benefits of using cellular networks to meet LPWA needs including reliability, coverage, security, trust, customer service, licensed spectrum and roaming.
According to The NB-IoT Forum, narrow-band IoT technology, which is planned to be standardized with 3GPP Release 13, will change the low-power, wide-area network paradigm.
There is extensive debate going on right low-power, wide area solution for billions of devices being added to the network.
Industry has moved forward very significantly in agreeing on standards based solution. All the ingredients and eco-system is in place to come out with a viable solution based on NB-IoT technology.
NB-IoT will provide trillion-euro revenue opportunity and will provide end to end solutions for smart homes, connected cars, agriculture, health care and smart metering.
To make it successful and cost effective, industry has to focus on developing integrated chipsets and modules, low cost authentication, enabling network functions virtualization-based HSS and open APIs.
