Availability of new spectrum bands is critical to implementation of some of the new techniques and deployment of 5G systems

A global survey of proposed spectrum bands indicates:

  • 3 to 6 GHz range (LTE sub-6GHz) for both LTE Advanced Pro and 5G NR phase 1
  • mmWave spectrum ( large bandwidth) for 5G NR phase 2

3 to 6 GHz band

  • Clear Spectrum Generally in the 3.3 to 3.8, 3.8 to 4.2, and 4.4 to 4.9 GHz region
  • TDD
  • bands than 4G
  • More important where 4G anchors and new 5G radio transmissions will be used
  • In addition to the licensed bands there will be additional unlicensed bands

mmWave bands

  • Widest achievable bandwidths
  • Some regions have multiple GHz spectrum
  • Industry is working on a usage model in fixed wireless applications
